Background census (1991-2011)
In 1991 when national census were released , there was reduction in female population of certain Indian states. The reason behind reduction was dowry system of India , preferences for sons and lack of awareness among the people. In India pressure for parents to provide large dowries for their daughters is most acute in certain states of India. In current census 2011 the reduction in the female population of certain Indian states continues to worsen between age 0-6 year with 919 .The declining of child sex ration is major indicator of woman disempowerment. Discrimination with woman begin before birth and continues in various form after birth -not fulfilling girls education and health -.
In India sex selective elimination of the feamle foetus skewed sex ratio. According to census data, the child sex Ratio (0-6 years) in India was 927 girls per 1,000 boys in 2001, which dropped drastically to 918 girls for every 1,000 boys in 2011. AT 2012 UNICEF report ranked in India 41st among 195 countries.
The Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao campaign
The Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao campaign is launched to promote the value of the girl child and highlighting the importance of empowering her with education. Awareness of declining child sex ration among the people of india is also part this campagin. Celebrities & Bollywood actress Priyanka Chopra, have become involved in beti bachao beti padhao abhayaan or campaign. This campaign is supported by many organisation like Indian Medical Association. To aware people about the Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao campaign social media or other means of communication is used to reach the billion plus population of our country.
Save girls, save the girl child campaign in India was started to end the gender-selective abortion of female foetuses. This "save the girl child " campaign is supported by many human rights groups, non-governmental organizations, and state and local government in India.The campaign has reported some success in parts of India.In 2009 it was reported that rates of female births increased from 802 to 882 for every 1000 male births in Gujarat.
The Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao scheme was started with an initial corpus of Rs 100 crore.Later on the Government of India also proposed Rs 150 crore to be spent by Ministry of Home Affairs on a scheme to increase the safety of women in large cities.
International Day of the Girl Child
On December 19, 2011, the United Nations General Assembly adopted Resolution 66/170 to declare 11 October as the International Day of the Girl Child, to recognize girls’ rights and the unique challenges girls face around the world.
On International Day of the Girl Child, Prime Minister Modi, called for eradication of female aborticide and invited suggestions from the citizens of India on "Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao" on the MyGov portal.
