Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle (GSLV)-D6 was successfully launched from the Second Launch Pad at the Satish Dhawan Space Centre SHAR (SDSC SHAR), Sriharikota in Andhra Pradesh. GSLV-D6 launched GSAT-6 , an advanced communication satellite into a Geosynchronous Transfer Orbit (GTO). The satellite is aimed to provide S-band communication services in the country. This was the second successful flight of the GSLV using the indigenous cryogenic engine.

About GSLV or GSLV-D6

  • GSLV  is an advanced launch vehicle that can be used to carry satellites heavier than 2000-kg.
  • GSLV  is designed to inject 2 ton class of communication satellites into Geosynchronous Transfer Orbit (GTO).
  • GSLV-D6 is the ninth flight of India's Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle (GSLV).
  • GSLV-D6 is also the fifth developmental flight of GSLV.
  • GSLV  has made 28 successful launches.GSLV-D5 successfully placed GSAT-14 satellite in January 2014
  • GSLV-D6 is three-stage heavy weight rocket with indigenously made Cryogenic Upper Stage (CUS).
  • GSLV-D6 has a diameter and length 3.4 m and 49.1 m .
  • GSLV-D6 has a lift-off mass of 416 t.

About Cryogenic Upper Stage

  • This is the third time the indigenously developed Cryogenic Upper Stage (CUS) is being carried on-board during a GSLV flight.
  • A Cryogenic rocket stage compared to solid is more efficient and provides more thrust for every kilogram of propellant it burns compared to solid and earth-storable liquid propellant rocket stages.
  • The cryogenic stage is technically a very complex system compared to solid or earth-storable liquid propellant stages due to its use of propellants at extremely low temperatures and the associated thermal and structural challenges.
  • The propellants at  low temperatures , Oxygen liquifies at -183 deg C and Hydrogen at -253 deg C , are to be pumped using turbo pumps running at around 40,000 rpm.
  • The three engines of Cryogenic Upper Stage (CUS) together develop a nominal thrust of 73.55 kN in vacuum.
  • During the flight, Cryogenic Upper Stage (CUS) fires for a nominal duration of 720 seconds.
  • This was the second successful flight of the GSLV using the indigenous cryogenic engine.

About GSAT-6 satellite

  • The GSAT or Geosynchronous satellite is a communication satellites developed by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) to make India self-reliant in broadcasting services.
  • The GSAT-6 has a six-metre wide unfurlable antenna.
  • The GSAT-6 has a weight 2117 kg
  • The GSAT-6 function in a geosynchronous orbit around the Earth.
  • The GSAT-1 was launched in April 2001.
  • The GSAT-6 satellite was carrying S-Band and C- Band transponders meant for providing S-band communication services in the country.
